M A K E - U P
by Emery Nicoletti

The purpose of applying make-up is to help create an illusion of perfectly flawless skin. Makeup helps us to hide slight imperfections and blend varying skin tones to even out complexion. Makeup gives us the opportunity to create looks and moods that can go from conservative or professional to aggressive and bold. By applying makeup properly we are able to enhance the beauty of the face by accentuating good features and minimizing poor ones.

The application of makeup is an art. It requires practice and fundamental knowledge of the structure of the face, the action of colors and their relationships to one another, and the principles of optical illusions. Our makeup artists realize that total beauty is an illusion based on coordinating the following interrelated factors: face makeup; hairstyle; harmony of color in the clothing, eyes, skin and hair; individuality of features; and personality.

Color selection presents a problem for most women when they are trying to choose lipstick, rouge, eye shadow, and foundations. Should the eye shadow match the eye color? Should cheek color be exactly the same as lip color? Should one use a dark foundation in the summer and a light one in the winter? All these questions can be answered by one of our makeup professionals.

Just as an artist divides his canvas into sections, a Metropolis Salon makeup artist divides the face into sections before applying makeup. By dividing the face into sections, we will be able to spot any unbalanced proportions and will then be able to correct them or conceal them through makeup application. The purpose of corrective makeup is to minimize poor features by drawing attention away from them. By using a foundation cream or lotion that is darker or lighter than the skin color, we can produce highlights and shadows that create optical illusions. In the eye area, eye shadow can be used to achieve the same effects. Shadows are created by the use of darker colors. Darker colors give the impression of decreasing the size of facial features. Highlights are created by the use of lighter colors. Lighter colors make the features look larger. You are probably familiar with these principles with regard to clothes. A black dress will make a woman look thinner than she really is. A white dress will make the same woman look heavier.

Makeup gives us the ability to create a look for ourselves that allows us to portray a variety of images from the self-confident to the embellished and exaggerated. Though the proper application of makeup takes a lot of practice and experimentation, it will boost the self-confidence of any woman who masters the art.
